Celebrating Michaelmas ~ 2010

Our celebration of Michaelmas was quite similar to past years, with just a few little changes...

This year the girls made our annual Michaelmas Day Cupcakes. . .

. . . and we were able to bake them all at once in our new oven!

We also had our traditional dinner for Michaelmas of Apple Chicken, Steamed Carrots, Garlic Pasta, French Bread, and Sparkling Blackberry Izze Drinks and I was able to use all FOUR burners for the first time in 10 years!

(Note:  My brother The Electrician will be back today to finish the electrical in the kitchen, and so this range/oven still isn't completely hooked up, but the gas has been connected and I am able to light the burners with a match!  So cool!!  This cooking with gas is a whole new learning experience for me though, and in the future I need to be sure to NOT simmer anything on the "power burner."  Oops!  Our chicken was a little scorched this year!  With all these new appliances, I'm having to learn how to cook all over again...)

It still tasted yummy. . . Thankfully!

Instead of coloring pictures, the children decided to illustrate their own St. Michael pictures, while dinner was cooking.

In the meantime, someone was anxiously awaiting his cupcake.

After dinner, and singing "Happy Feast Day" to St. Michael, it was time for a few little sword fights...

... and finally stabbing those Devil Food Cupcakes.

We hope you all had a Happy Michaelmas Day!

The Little Flower Novena

~ Day Nine ~

Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of divine love.

V. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created.

R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray: O God, who have instructed the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be ever truly wise and rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love: O my God! I believe in Thee: strengthen my faith. All my hopes are in Thee: do Thou secure them. I love Thee: teach me to love Thee daily more and more.

The Act of Contrition: O my God! I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

Ninth Day

Dear Little St. Thérèse, by love and suffering while you were on earth, you won the power with God which you now enjoy in heaven. Since your life there began, you have showered down countless blessings on this poor world; you have been an instrument made use of by your divine Spouse to work countless miracles. I beg of you to remember all my wants. Sufferings must come to me also, may I use them to love God more, and follow my Jesus better. You are especially the little missionary of love. Make me love Jesus more, and all others for His sake. With all my heart I thank the most Holy Trinity for the wonderful blessings conferred on you, and upon the world through you. Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  The Mission of the Little Flower. I do not intend to remain inactive in Heaven. I want to work for the Church and for souls. I have asked this of God and I am certain that He will grant my request. I will spend my Heaven doing good upon earth. This is not impossible, since the angels though always enjoying the beatific vision, watch over us. No, I cannot be at rest until the end of the world. I beseech Thee, O Jesus, to cast Thy divine glance on a great number of little souls. I beg of Thee to choose in this world a legion of little victims, worthy of Thy Love.

Concluding Prayer Prayed Each Day:
O Lord, You have said: Unless you become as little children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven; grant us, we beg You, so to follow, in humility and simplicity of heart, the footsteps of the Virgin blessed Thérèse, that we may attain to an everlasting reward. Amen.

A Spiritual Bouquet...

. . . Will you join me in praying?

I haven't had much time to blog lately - between contractors, homeschooling, doctors appointments, and a baby shower I hosted this past weekend - other than the novena to St. Therese Prayers and the giveaway posts. However, I wanted to to ask if you could all add one more very special intention to your prayers...

Last week, on Tuesday, September 21st, after putting a cake in the oven for my mom's birthday, I got online to check our email.   I noticed a prayer request that had just come through from our Homeschool Group from my friend Kristin, Rascal's Godmother.  Before I could even finish reading the first sentence, my eyes filled with tears and I couldn't finish reading. . . Our dear friend, Danielle, had just received the heartbreaking news that morning that her husband, Major Robert Baldwin - who had just been home for 2 weeks R&R, had been killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult this is for Danielle and their 4 young children ages 8, 4, 3, and 7 months.  Danielle has asked for prayers and I thought I would pass that request on to all of my friends and visitors here at Shower of Roses.    I would like to send Danielle and her children a "Spiritual Bouquet" of prayers and was hoping that you all would join me in praying for Rob's soul and that our dear Lord will comfort Danielle and their beautiful children in this time of sadness.

If you could either email me, or leave a comment below (by October 6th), specifying the number and types of prayers that you will offer and I will include them in a card for their family:

______Rosary
______Chaplet of Divine Mercy
______Holy Communion
______Masses
______ Holy hours
______Other Prayers

I've been listening to this song all week, since a friend shared it on Facebook...

Thank you all for your prayers!!

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 8

A photo taken four days after the death of St. Therese, when she was still exposed in the choir adorned with flowers.

~ Day Eight ~

Amen.

Eighth Day

Dear St. Thérèse, like you I have to die one day. I beseech you, obtain from God, by reminding Him of your own precious death, that I may have a holy death, strengthened by the Sacraments of the Church, entirely resigned to the most holy Will of God, and burning with love for Him. May my last words on earth be, "My God. I love You." Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Death. It says in the catechism that death is nothing but the separation of the soul and body. Well, I have no fear of a separation which will unite me forever with the good God. I am happy to die because I shall be able to help souls who are dear to me, far more than I can here below. Life is not sad; it is very joyous. If you say, "This exile is sad," I understand you. We are wrong to give the name "life" to something which will end; it is only to the things of Heaven that we should apply this beautiful name.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 7

This is a painting that St. Therese finished in 1892, when she was 19, and gave to her sister Celine.

~ Day Seven ~

Amen.

Seventh Day

O little martyr of Love, you know now even better than in the days of your pilgrimage that Love embraces all vocations; that it is Love alone which counts, which unites us perfectly to God and conforms our will with His. All you sought on earth was love; to love Jesus as He had never yet been loved. Use your power in heaven to make us love Him. If only we love Him we shall desire to make Him loved by others; we shall pray much for souls. We shall no longer fear death, for it will unite us to Him forever. Obtain for us the grace to do all for the love of God, to give Him pleasure, to love Him so well that He may be pleased with us as He was with you. Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Love of God. I will love God alone and will not have the misfortune of attaching myself to creatures, now that my heart perceive what He has in store for those who love Him. What attracts me to the kingdom of Heaven is the call of our Lord, the hope of loving Him as I have so desired and the thought that I shall be able to make Him loved by a great number of souls who will bless Him forever. When Christ said, "Give Me a Drink," it was the love of His poor creatures that He, the Creator of all things, desired. He thirsted for love. Remember that the dear Jesus is there in the tabernacle expressly for you, for you alone. Remember that He is consumed with a desire to come into your heart.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 6

Given by Archbishop Fulton Sheen at the Carmelite church in Whitefriar St., Dublin, Ireland in 1973.  You can watch the last couple minutes here

~ Day Six ~

Amen.

Sixth Day

St. Thérèse, Patroness of the Missions, be a great missionary throughout the world to the end of time. Remind our Master of His own words, "The harvest is great, but the laborers are few." Your zeal for souls was so great, obtain a like zeal for those now working for souls, and beg God to multiply their numbers, that the millions to whom Jesus is yet unknown may be brought to know, love and follow Him. Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Zeal for souls. Let us work together for the salvation of souls. We have only the day of this life to save souls and to give them to the Lord as proofs of our love. I tell Jesus that I am glad not to be able to see, with the eyes of my soul, this beautiful heaven which awaits me, in order that He may vouchsafe to open it forever to poor unbelievers. I cannot perform brilliant works; I cannot preach the Gospel or shed my blood. But what matter? My brothers work in place of me, and I a little child, keep very close to the royal throne. I love for those who are carrying on the warfare. My deeds, my little sufferings, can make God loved all over the world.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 5

Therese at fifteen (April 1888)
The enormous bow, called a chou, on the back of her dress has been colored over on the photograph.  ~ Pierre Descouvemont, Therese and Lisieux

This photo was taken just a few days before Therese's entrance into Carmel on April 9th of 1888, the feast of of the Annunciation.  Therese was very happy to unite her own consent with the Blessed Mother's fiat.

~ Day Five ~

Amen.

Fifth Day

Little Flower of Jesus, from the very first moment of your religious life you thought only of denying yourself in all things so as to follow Jesus more perfectly; help me to bear patiently the trials of my daily life. Teach me to make use of the trials, the sufferings, the humiliations, that come my way, to learn to know myself better and to love God more. Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Patience in Sufferings. I do not fear trials sent by Jesus, for even in the most bitter suffering we can see that it is His loving hand which causes it. When we are expecting nothing but suffering, we are quite surprised at the least joy; but then suffering itself becomes the greatest of joys when we seek it as a precious treasure. Far from resembling those beautiful saints who practiced all sorts of austerities from childhood, my penance consisted in breaking my self-will, in keeping back a sharp reply, in doing little kindnesses to those about me, but considering these deeds as nothing.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 4

Therese at thirteen (February 1886)

~ Day Four ~

I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance , and to amend my life. Amen.

Forth Day

Dear Little Flower of Carmel, bearing so patiently the disappointments and delays allowed by God, and preserving in the depths of your soul an unchanging peace because you sought only God’s will, ask for me complete conformity to that adorable Will in all the trials and disappointments of life. If the favors I am asking during this Novena are pleasing to God, obtain them for me. If not, it is true I shall feel the refusal keenly, but I too wish only God’s Will, and pray in the words you used, that I "may ever be perfectly fulfilled in me." Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Abandonment to God. I fear only one thing---to keep my own will; take it, my God, for I choose all that You choose. The only happiness here below is to strive to be always content with what Jesus gives us. I can demand nothing with fervor, except the perfect accomplishment of God’s will in my soul. O my Beloved, I offer myself to You, that You may perfectly accomplish in me Your holy designs, and I will not allow anything created to be an obstacle in their path.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 3

Therese at the age of eight
with her sister Celine (1881)

"This was the year Therese entered the Abbey school.  The skipping rope Therese is holding was, along with the swing, her favourite game because she very much liked the movement, "Higher," she would tell her father or her sister when they pushed the swing, "so I can see Mother Godet's bonnet."  She was their neighbor at Les Buissonnets and would work in her garden with a cotton bonnet on her head.  You can still see the two hooks on a beam in the shed where the swing was hung."
~ Pierre Descouvemont, Therese and Lisieux

~ Day Three ~

I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance , and to amend my life. Amen.

Third Day

Dear Little Flower, make all things lead me to heaven and God, Whether I look at the sun, the moon, the stars and the vast expanse in which they float, or whether I look at the flowers of the field, the trees of the forest, the beauties of the earth so full of color and so glorious, may they speak to me of the love and power of God; may they all sing His praises in my ear. Like you may I daily love Him more and more in return for His gifts. Teach me often to deny myself in my dealings with others, that I may offer to Jesus many little sacrifices. Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  The Use of God’s Gifts. How much benefit have I received from the beauties of nature, bestowed in such abundance. How they raise me to Him who placed such wonders in this land of exile which is only to last a day. O sparkling nature, if I did not see God in you, you would be naught but a great tomb. With your little hand which caresses Mary, You sustain the universe and bestow life; and You think of me, O Jesus my little King. I do not wish creatures to have one atom of my love. I wish to give all to Jesus, since He has shown me that He alone is perfect happiness.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 2

Therese at three-and-a-half
taken in July of 1876

"Generally a happy child, she pouted that day becuase the big, black veil under which the photographer hid made her apprehensive."
~ Pierre Descouvemont, Therese and Lisieux

~ Day Two ~

I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance , and to amend my life. Amen.

Second Day

O dear little Saint, now that you see the crucified Jesus in heaven, still bearing the wounds caused by sin, you know still more clearly than you did upon earth the value of souls, and the priceless worth of that Precious Blood which He shed to save them. As I am one of those children for whom Christ died, obtain for me all the graces I need in order to profit by that Precious Blood. Use your great power with our divine Lord and pray for me.

Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Sin. The only grace I ask, O Jesus, is never to offend Thee. By love and not by fear, does a soul avoid committing the least fault. Yes, even if I have on my conscience every possible crime, I should lose none of my confidence; my heart breaking with sorrow, I should go and throw myself into the arms of my Savior. The remembrance of my faults humbles me and makes me afraid to rely on my own strength, which is nothing but weakness.

Amen.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 1

The feast day of St. Thérèse is coming up! Her feast is celebrated on the 1st of October and on the 3rd of October on the Traditional Calendar. The novena for her intercession can be said anytime, but we will be praying this particular novena in anticipation of her feast, ending on the eve of the Feast (Sept 30th or Oct 2nd).

"Many people report unexpectedly finding or being given a literal rose or roses (or smelling the perfume of roses) after praying to St. Thérèse, who said on her deathbed, 'After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my Heaven doing good upon earth. I will raise up a mighty host of little saints. My mission is to make God loved...'" Quoted from Fisheaters

There are many different options for praying novenas to St. Therese. . . Last year, on the nine days leading up to her feast, we prayed this Nine Day Novena.

This year we will begin each day with the Twenty-four 'Glory Be's’ Novena to St. Therese.  This is a very lovely novena (plus I can use my beautiful little "Shower of Roses" Chaplet!) and quite easy to complete.  It is also said to be the most dear to the Little Flower.  Here is the little story that is attached to this novena:
"Father Putigan, a Jesuit priest, began the Novena to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus on December 3, 1925, asking the glorious Saint for one great favour. For nine days, he recited the “Glory Be” 24 times thanking the Holy Trinity for the favours and Graces showered on Saint Therese during the 24 years that she lived on this earth. The good father asked Saint Therese that as a sign that his novena was being heard, he would receive from someone a freshly plucked rose. On the third day of the novena, an unknown person sought out Father Putigan and presented him with a beautiful rose.  Father Putigan began the second novena on December 24 of the same year, and as a sign, asked for a white rose. On the fourth day of this novena, one of the Sister-nurses brought him a white rose, saying, “Saint Therese sent you this.”  Amazed the priest asked “where did you get this?”   “I was in the chapel,” said the Sister, “and as I was leaving, I passed the alter above which hangs the beautiful picture of Saint Therese. This rose fell at my feet. I wanted to put it back in the bouquet, but a thought came to me that you should have it."

Here is how the Twenty-four 'Glory Be's Novena to St. Therese is prayed:
The Glory Be is said 24 times each day for nine days, in thanksgiving for all the blessings and favours given to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus during the 24 years of her life. Start the novena each day with this prayer:

“Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit, I thank You for all the blessings and favours You have showered upon the soul of Your servant Therese of the Child Jesus, during the 24 years she spent here on earth, and in consideration of the merits of this, Your most beloved Saint, I beseech You to grant me this favour, if it is in accordance with Your most Holy Will and is not an obstacle to my salvation.”

After this prayer, follow with the 24 Glory Be’s, between each of which should be included this short prayer”

“Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, pray for us.”

We will also be praying the Little Flower Novena each evening.  I plan to post the prayers here each day. Here are the prayers for Day One:

I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance , and to amend my life. Amen.

First Day

St. Thérèse, privileged Little Flower of Jesus and Mary, I approach you with childlike confidence and deep humility. I lay before you my desires, and beg that through your intercession they may be realized. Did you not promise to spend your heaven doing good upon earth? Grant me according to this promise the favors I am asking from you.

Intercede for us all the days of our life, but specially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Confidence in God. We can never have too much confidence in the good God who is so powerful and so merciful. We obtain from Him as much as we hope for. If you are nothing, do you forget that Jesus is everything? You have only to lose your nothingness in His Infinity and think only of loving Him.

Amen.

St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, pray for us.

Our Little Christmas Rose. . .

. . . is 9 Months Old Today!

It seems like it was just last September when we anxiously awaiting her arrival!  The time is flying by way too fast. . .

Since I am so awful about recording anything in that cute baby book I ordered for her . . .  (It was actually my 2nd choice... The one I really wanted - When You Were Very Small A Catholic Baby’s Record - and ordered months before she was born, ended up being backordered and then my order was finally canceled a few months ago since the book had been discontinued.  Boohoo! I knew I should have bought multiple copies the last time I ordered it as a gift.), Here is another little update so that I will be able look back and fill in all those blank pages someday:

Today's Weight :  15 pounds

She is such a tiny little thing!   I had to take her in today for a weight check and, as usual, the doctors are a little concerned.  However, I am sure that she is just taking after her older siblings, in addition to constantly burning way too many calories since she refuses to sit still for very long.

Milestones:
  • She is now standing up by herself without holding on to anything or having any help, though she hasn't attempted to take any steps without holding on to something.  I have a feeling it won't be long!
  • Her very first tooth broke through on August 25th (bottom right), her 2nd tooth (bottom right) broke through on September 4th, and her top tooth (on the left) broke through last Wednesday, September 8th.   This past week she has been grinding those teeth together ALL THE TIME and I don't know what to do to get her to stop! Any suggestions?  (Oohh!!  Speaking of teeth, Twinkle Toes just lost her 7th tooth this evening - 2nd on the top left.   Hummmm... I wonder what the tooth fairy is going bring?!?)
  • Yesterday she started saying both Dada (when she is happy!) and Mama (when hungry, of course!).  It is SO cute!

New St. Therese the Little Flower Faith Folder from Faith Folders for Catholics ~ Review & Giveaway!

With the feast of St. Therese coming up this next month, I was so excited to have the opportunity to review Holy Learning's (previously Faith Folders for Catholics) newest release - the St. Therese the Little Flower Faith Folder!

In the past our family has enjoyed a number of other Faith Folders (aka Lap Books) from Faith Folders for Catholics including the Advent Lap Book, Lent Lap Book, and most recently the Year for Priests Lap Book.  They all turned out beautifully and I just love seeing my children pull them back out from time to time to look through (or show others!) their work.

Like all of the other Faith Folders we have enjoyed, Lindy (owner of Faith Folders for Catholics) has done an amazing job at putting together a lovely collection of mini-books for this Folder on St. Therese, from the sweet little rose shaped book containing "Words of the Little Flower," to the "Road to Carmel" pick a tab book, and so many more.

One of my favorite features is that multiple options for printing the mini-books are included!  For example, you can print the mini-books in either black & white or in color (I will often print the black & white version onto a color paper of our choice to save on ink), and there is usually the option between pre-typed text or blank lines for the children to fill in themselves, making the folder easily adaptable for a variety of ages and grade levels.

My children are very excited to start working on this new Faith Folder as we prepare to celebrate the Feast of St. Therese!  Will you join us?

The St. Therese the Little Flower Faith Folder can be purchased from Holy Learning (previously Faith Folders for Catholics) for only $10 (Digitial E-Book Option) or $14 (CD-Rom Option).

Faith Folders for Catholics has also offered to give-away one digital copy of this new Faith Folder to a visitor here at Shower of Roses!

Little Flowers Girls' Club ~ Loyalty

Here are a few of the highlights from our Little Flowers Girls' Club Meeting for the Wreath II virtue of Loyalty and St. Lucy:

~ Meeting and Notebook Pages ~

Amy gave the talk on Loyalty for this meeting and read a story about St. Lucy from the lovely book Around the Year Once Upon a Time Saints by Ethel Pochocki.

The notebook page for St. Lucy was my favorite from this past year.   It was simple, but I just loved the image of St. Lucy and thought the page turned out so pretty.  We started with red and white cardstock.  I then found a poppy flower border (flipping it for the right side of the page) to decorate the corners.  I also typed the St. Lucy prayer so that, when it was cut out by the girls, it would be heart shaped.    The document I made can be downloaded here.

Here is my sample page:

~ Craft ~

Since the flower for this meeting was a Poppy, I ordered the Memorial Poppies with Poem from Oriental Trading and replaced the poem with the memory verse.

Had this meeting taken place in November or December I would have loved to make Santa Lucia Crowns with the girls again.  Maybe next time!
