{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life. ~

I haven't been feeling very well this week, but had to pop in to say hello and share a few pictures.   Also, in your charity, could you please say a prayer for my husband's Uncle Frank, my father-in-law's brother, who passed away yesterday afternoon.

 Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

I've been eyeing these adorable Shining Light Dolls for awhile now and finally ordered a few to save for the girls' stockings this upcoming Christmas!

{happy}

My mom celebrated her birthday this past weekend and we met her at the Farmer's Market with a smoothie and a gift!  This year we decided to surprise her with a lovely hand-painted bookmark of her Confirmation Saint along with a copy of the Walk with the Saints Journal.  She loved it!

{funny}

The kids loved spending some time with their grandma on her birthday and walking along the railroad tracks.  I couldn't resist snapping a couple pictures!

{real}

It seems like nearly every one of my packages has been arriving damaged lately.... ("Damaged Doll Deliveries" wasn't exactly what I had in mind for D week!)  Last week one of these dolls arrived with the package smashed.  I called Amazon and they said they would send another, and to just keep the original.  The second arrived in even worse condition than the first!   I wasn't going to call, since the actual doll inside the box was still okay, but decided to let them know anyways.  This time they insisted on not only refunding the money, they also gave me a $10 promotional credit for the hassle and said to wait a few days before ordering again (if I choose to do so) so that the shipping department could make any necessary adjustments to protect future orders.   Note: That was a few days ago, so if anyone places an order they should arrive in better shape, but I am not making any promises! ;)  However, even with smashed up packaging, they are still just as pretty as can be!  (Oh, and the next day?  That stone I had ordered arrived in three pieces.  Seriously?!)

  1. I think you need to talk to your local post office or delivery person maybe? That's really weird all those items being banged up.

    1. The first arrived Fed Ex, and it was loose in a box with other heavy items which most likely smashed that one. The second doll and the stone were both delivered by USPS. I can't even count the number of packages that have arrived damaged this past year from the USPS. One box arrived with a puncture hole - something stabbed all the way through and into two books really damaging them as well. Books bent in half and stuffed into the mailbox when shipped in envelopes - sometimes we can barely get them out of our mailbox. (There is one lady that delivers mail who refuses to get out of the vehicle and lays on the horn until someone comes out. My guess is she is who stuffs our box.) I never have any issues with the UPS - other than them taking out one of the kids picnic tables and hitting our old front porch one year ;) I do think it is time to go talk to the local postmaster... This is getting ridiculous and I'm starting to think the USPS has something against me...

    2. Hi Jessica,
      Sorry you have having such bad luck with damaged boxes. Interestingly, I have a friend who has complained of the same thing with her mail person - not getting out of the truck, but instead lays on the horn until they come outside. They are also rural. I wonder if it's some sort of policy??

      My mail carrier (in town) always carries things that won't fit in the box up to my door.

    3. It really depends on the person! The lady we use to have for our USPS mailman was wonderful!! She ended up getting cancer and is no longer on our route, though I do see her occasionally at the local office. Since then, over the past few years, we have had a rotation of a few other employees. Only one has refused to get out of the truck... she will, eventually, if I can't get to the door for some reason, but she always seems so upset. I think she has the wrong job, if she hates delivering packages so much! ;) It isn't too much of a hassle for them, since they use our driveway as the "turn around" everyday anyways. It is so frustrating that nearly every damaged package is delivered by them... The pizza stone was packaged well and also marked fragile very clearly. They had to really toss that box around to break it like they did...

      The UPS (other than those couple incidents years ago, and us telling them they needed to slow down in our driveway) men are all awesome! I do so much shopping online, especially with Amazon Prime, so they are here frequently. I have apologized for the quantity of packages a few times, but they always say they are appreciative for the work and they don't mind at all... It's what they do! Love their attitudes!

  2. I have been VERY impressed with Amazon. I ordered a Kindle almost 2 years ago but got the extended warranty. It quit charging, when I contacted them they sent a replacement without ANY hassle, the new Kindle is running perfectly. I also got a free month of prime for the hassle, which has been nice. I ordered one of your recommends so I hope you got credit for it. We are going to do the States so I began with F is for First State. I'm pretty sure I linked through here to add it to my shopping cart.

    1. That is great! They really do have excellent customer service! We have Prime and it more than pays for itself every year in gas savings and also mailing gifts to godchildren/family at Christmas! :)

      I just checked my affiliate stats and sure enough there was an order for F is for First State - actually 2 copies have been ordered this month so far! Thank you so much for using my links and blessing our family in this way! I hope you enjoy the book! Now that we are settling into our new school year it is time to get back to continuing our State-by-State study!

    2. Honestly Jessica, I feel it is the least I can do because I glean so many good ideas through Shower of Roses and Catholic Cuisine! I truly appreciate that you share!

  3. Jessica, Could you take a picture or two of the inside of the Walk with the Saints Journal? They didn't have any additional pictures on Amazon when I clicked through. Thank you.

    1. I didn't take any pictures of the inside (it arrived wrapped in plastic) before giving it to mom, but we did give a copy to our oldest son on his birthday and I will see if I can borrow his for a few pictures. In the meantime you can see a few additional views on the publisher's website! Hope that helps!

      Also watch for sales on the planner. I purchased the two I had for gifts when Tan had an awesome sale on them... Unfortunately, they aren't on sale at the moment.

  4. Our mail carrier has done similar things. At least Amazon is usually accommodating. I've been wondering, what are those little dolls made out of? wood? vinyl? Just curious.

    Any ideas for something similar for a boy? Hope you start feeling better soon.

    1. Yes, they are made of vinyl, and honestly I didn't think I was going to like them at first! They really are super cute though and I think my girls, especially Rose, is going to love playing with them. They actually remind me of Little People (which I only tolerate since my little kids love them so much) but these are so much nicer and such darling representations of Our Lady.

      As for a little boy? I do believe they will be coming out with some Saint versions soon including St. Nicholas (I'm hoping in time for his feast day this year!), St. Francis, St. Martin de Porres, St. Joseph, St. Padre Pio and Blessed John Paul II!

      I'm also hoping to order the St. Therese and Our Lady of Mount Carmel just as soon as they are available! :)

  5. So not cool with the USPS/UPS/FedEx!!!! Crazy! At least here at my house they leave them at the front door or side door if large. The only time items may get damaged is because of HOW they were packaged in the first place or in transit getting banged up. I've been mostly lucky with the shipping of things, I must say.

    Hope you feel better soon, girl! You've got CELEBRATING to do starting with St. Michael and the Archangels and then your anniversary and many feasts that are coming up! I know how much you LOVE this week that's coming up! GET WELL SOON!!!

    Blessings!

    1. I know! Such a fun filled week ahead and I need to make a few plans to celebrate! It's definitely time to make my health a priority again... It is so easy to put that at the bottom of the list when life gets too busy.

  6. Hope you feel better soon! Your mother looks like a twenty-something (with class ;-) and I'm sure she had a great birthday with you all. I've been thinking about these Shining Light dolls for Christmas gifts too. I'm hoping Amazon will stock Our Lady of Mount Carmel soon. - Genevieve

  8. Sorry about your mail delivery mishaps. :/ Those SL dolls (and the pic of Bud reading in your recent post) are adorable! Happy birthday to your mom. God bless her ... she looks like a teenager! Hope you feel better, soon! Bernadette :)

  9. I hope you are on your way to feeling better soon! I think those dolls are just adorable, and I can't wait to order some myself, for my girls and some goddaughters!!

  10. We're tickled here to know you gave the bookmark to your mom! (and I enjoyed seeing it again - that St. Francis was one of my favorites with all the Lydia birds :-) ) You're children must have so many wonderful times with their grandma!

    1. When I ordered it I knew I would end up giving it to one of my parents, the hard thing was deciding which! (They both happened to choose St. Francis of Assisi as their Confirmation Saint as children!)

      By the way, have you happened to see the October edition of Catholic Digest? I mentioned your Rosary Roses (including a picture) in my submission for the Celebrate/Quiet Moments section! :) If not I'll have to take a picture of mine and email it to you.
